The Northumberland Humane Society is seeking a Registered Veterinary Technician
RVT
Full time – 40 hrs per week
The Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) is responsible for providing support and functional guidance to Veterinarians, Registered Veterinarian Technicians, and administrative staff in the shelter as well as Animal Care attendant and Animal Control Officers in the shelter. The RVT is responsible for overall animal medical care and customer relations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Coordinate patient care and communicate effectively with service areas regarding patient status, care procedures and location in the clinic and shelter;
Maintain accurate and complete medical records ensuring optimal care and patient/client confidentiality;
Observe and evaluate the health status of patients, administer, collect samples, perform diagnostic testing, assist with patient restraint and general care;
Under the delegation of the veterinarian administer medications, vaccines and treatments;
Providing emergency first aid or general nursing care;
Observing and reporting on the behaviour and condition of animals;
Provide technical support and functional guidance to, Veterinarians, Registered Veterinarian Technicians, Veterinarian Assistants, administrative staff, Animal Care Technicians and Animal Control Officers;
Notify management of any health problems or concerns regarding animals;
Follows policies and procedures set out by the Society;
Works in compliance with OAVT requirements and the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations;
Collect laboratory samples;
Restrain animals in a safe, efficient, and compassionate manner during examinations and procedures;
Obtain accurate vital signs on patients;
Document any changes of a pets condition and vital signs in medical records;
Communicate with clients in a friendly, compassionate, and professional way on either the status of their pet, or any questions they may have;
Notify management of any employee concerns, including: harassment or violence, tardiness or absence from work or any other infraction or violation of NHS policies or the law; and
Perform other duties as assigned to assist in the smooth flow of the daily operation of the Shelter
QUALIFICATIONS
Successful completion and diploma received with an accredited Veterinary Technician program recognized by the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT);
Successful completion of the Veterinary Technician Examination (VTNE) and the OAVT mandatory ethics exam;
Ongoing OAVT registration and full member in good standing with the OAVT;
· Knowledge of a variety of animals, animal behaviour and their care requirements;
· Genuine compassion and empathy for animals, colleagues, volunteers and customers;
· Good command of the English language – verbal and written;
· Good communication and customer service skills;
· Must be flexible to perform a variety of duties;
· Must be a team player and possess the ability to work effectively, independently;
· Must not have allergies limiting or affecting exposure to animals;
· Ability to remain professional under pressure;
· Pro-active, self-directed and able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment;
· Able to multi-task, prioritize work load and be flexible to adapt to change and shifting priorities;
· Crisis management skills; and
· Knowledge of AODA, WHMIS and Health and Safety procedures.
· Excellent oral, written and computer skills
· Possess a valid driver’s license
· Demonstrate initiative, confidentiality, tact, discretion, teamwork, sincere love of animals
· Note: Must not have allergies limiting or affecting exposure to animals
