Smart choices in veterinary anesthesia: Selecting protocols for optimal care

March 24, 2026

In this evidence-based, clinically focused presentation, Dr. Pang, anesthesiologist at the University of Calgary, will discuss the use of alfaxalone in the perioperative period. The session will cover its application across a range of small animal species (e.g., dogs, cats, and exotics), addressing sedation, induction of anesthesia, and various routes of administration. The cardiovascular and respiratory effects of alfaxalone will be reviewed, including its potential beneficial impact on heart rate and arterial blood pressure. The relatively novel GV20 administration route will also be presented, along with a discussion on the perioperative role of maropitant. This presentation aims to address common, practical questions encountered by DVMs and RVTs in everyday clinical practice.
