Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians Launches New Veterinary Technician/Technology Education Accreditation Program

Guelph, ON— The Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT) is pleased to announce the launch of the Veterinary Technician/Technology Education Accreditation Program (VTEAP), a comprehensive new accreditation framework designed to strengthen and support the future of veterinary technology education in Ontario and beyond.

The OAVT undertook an extensive audit and evaluation of the existing accreditation model for veterinary technician and technology education programs in Ontario. This review was initiated to ensure accreditation standards continue to reflect the evolving needs of the profession, and support quality, consistency, and accountability in education delivery.

Guided by the invaluable input of education partners, subject matter experts, and other interested parties, the review process identified key opportunities to enhance program quality, delivery, and service. This collaborative effort has resulted in several significant milestones, including:

  • Development of the Essential Competencies document
  • A comprehensive review and publication of the Entry to Practice Standards for Registered Veterinary Technicians
  • Engagement of additional third-party accreditation firm to further refine accreditation standards
  • Establishment of a subject matter expert working group to guide the accreditation decision-making framework
  • A broad consultation process with the veterinary technician/technology education community to gather feedback on the VTEAP draft
  • Formal approval of the VTEAP manual for publication in French and English
  • Creation of a secure, centralized platform to support all VTEAP-related activities

“The launch of the VTEAP is a significant milestone in strengthening veterinary technology education and ensuring graduates are well prepared to meet the demands of professional practice,” said the Elise Wickett, OAVT Executive Director & Registrar.

The OAVT extends its sincere gratitude to all partners, educators, subject matter experts, and RVTs contributed their time, expertise, and insights throughout this process. Their dedication has been instrumental in shaping a robust and future-focused accreditation program.

The OAVT looks forward to the continued advancement of veterinary technology education and the positive impact the VTEAP will have on students, educators, and the profession across Canada.
