Biofilms are communities of microorganisms that adhere to a surface and produce a protective extracellular matrix. This matrix protects the organisms from desiccation, the immune system, and antimicrobials, potentially making the bacteria more resistant to treatment with antibiotics. Within biofilms, bacteria also share characteristics, including antimicrobial resistance, complicating infection management, and necessitating additional treatment strategies.
