As a Registered Veterinary Technician, you will play a crucial role in providing quality medical care to animals. Your duties will include assisting the Clinical Veterinarian in ensuring the health and welfare of all animals at the facility through observations, physical examinations, diagnostics, and treatments/procedures. The Registered Veterinary Technician will also perform study procedures as required. To excel in this role, you should have a strong knowledge of animal anatomy and physiology, be proficient in performing laboratory tests, and have excellent communication skills. Additionally, attention to detail and the ability to work well in a team environment are essential.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Key Activities
- Involved in research trials with a strong emphasis on animal health
- Recording, analyzing and reporting results of tests and procedures, often using computer programs
- Ensuring adherence to test procedures
- Assist in performing test protocol as necessary
- Monitoring of health of research animals
- Performing animal health procedures
- Must understand the nature of the trials being conducted by Transpharmation
- Other duties as assigned
Animal Health & Welfare
- Observe and assess animals daily
- Participate in the treatment and monitoring of medical cases including daily animal treatments
- Recording all data related to animal health & care into the relevant documentation such as veterinary software
- Animal handling & restraint
- Assist veterinarians with medical, surgical and dental procedures which may include preparing animals, instruments and equipment for surgery, and administering/monitoring anesthesia
- Perform standard tasks which may include blood collections, urine collection, IV catheter placements, injections, dentistry, necropsy procedures, radiography, etc
- Report any concerns re: medical and/or behavioural welfare of the animals to the Clinical Veterinarian
- Participate in training workshops on animal procedures and equipment use
- Opportunities to join various committees including the health & safety committee, and animal care committee
Research
- Participation in study procedures whenever required which may include hands on skills such as blood collections, dosing, post-dose monitoring but also data entry
Responsibility For Technical Resources
- Preventive maintenance and care of animal health equipment
- Reporting to appropriate personnel if equipment is malfunctioning or non-functional
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
- Veterinary technology diploma with successful completion of the VTNE resulting in Registered status
- Minimum of 2-3 years of experience which may include working in clinical private practice and/or another research facility
