About Toronto Cat Rescue:

Toronto Cat Rescue (TCR) is a volunteer-driven, registered charity that rescues over 2500 cats each year through the efforts of approximately 900 dedicated volunteers. TCR is not a shelter, but a network of foster homes that stretches throughout the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and Region of Waterloo (WR). Our mission is to rescue and find homes for abandoned, sick or injured cats from situations of abuse, neglect or imminent euthanasia. We provide the highest quality of treatment for all the cats at TCR with experience and compassion.

About the Position

This is a unique opportunity for a compassionate, experienced Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) who wants to make a meaningful impact in cat rescue work. As the Medical Program Manager, you will lead the coordination, and oversight of our medical program, ensuring every cat in our care receives high-quality, thoughtful, and timely health care. Ideal for an independent, organized RVT seeking flexible work, this role blends cat medical expertise, leadership skills, case management, and hands-on guidance for our foster network.

Implement, and refine medical protocols and decision trees for intake assessment, treatment, infection control, and preventative care.

Practice empirical treatment when appropriate, using evidence-based judgment and shelter medicine best practices to guide care.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records for all cats in care, in spreadsheets and Petpoint CRM.
Case Management

Review medical histories, diagnostics, and treatment plans; provide informed recommendations to the volunteer teams (coordinators, foster parents and store support teams)
Monitor cats in foster homes through ongoing communication about medical needs, medication compliance, and follow-up care.
Respond to daytime medical emergencies to ensure timely care for the cat’s medical needs.
Lead in medical decision-making for urgent, complex, or chronic cases.
Comfortable participating in euthanasia decisions in collaboration with the attending veterinarian, including evaluating medical and quality of life considerations for most humane outcomes.
Foster & Staff Support

Provide clear medical guidance to fosters, volunteers, and internal team members.
Educate fosters on medication administration, isolation,  infection control, and post-operative care.
Offer training on shelter-medicine best practices when needed.
Pet Retention & Post-Adoption Support

(Medical & Behavioural Cases)

Provide medical guidance to new adopters to support successful transitions.
Assist with post-adoption medical concerns, offering guidance while adhering to TCR’s adoption policies.
Support behavioural retention cases in collaboration with our behaviour team, offering medical insight when behaviour may be influenced by health issues.
Help promote pet retention by offering practical, empathetic, and evidence-informed support to adopters navigating early medical or behavioural challenges.
Logistics & Administration

Manage ordering, inventory, tracking and distribution of medications, preventatives, medical supplies, and equipment.
Collaborate with leadership to identify medical priorities, improve processes, problem-solve complicated cases, and support organizational planning.
Compile and hand over daily case reports, including cases that warrant closer oversight, to after-hours (evening and weekends) coordinator
