Position Description
Title: Surgical RVT
Reporting to: Spay/Neuter Clinic Coordinator
Status: Full-time
Salary Range: $23.00/hour ($24.54/hour after successful completion of probationary period)
POSITION SUMMARY
We are currently looking for a dedicated individual to join our team as full-time Surgical RVT for our Spay Neuter Clinic. Reporting to the Spay/Neuter Clinic Coordinator, this individual will provide support to the veterinary team, as well as support the day-to-day care of animals that are in the care of the clinic. The Surgical RVT will mentor, support and work closely with all staff to ensure efficiency in the daily tasks and scheduling of the clinic. The person in this position ensures that all animal welfare policies and procedures, health and safety standards, and disease and infection control policies are adhered to at all times. The ideal candidate for this position will be a leader by nature, and be highly motivated to make a positive difference in animal wellness at PHS. The successful candidate must be able to work weekdays from 7:00am to 5:30pm.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performing examinations, administering treatments and performing diagnostic tests on animals within the spay neuter clinic.
- Monitoring animal health while in the care of the clinic, monitor anesthesia and recovery of patients.
- In collaboration with the Head RVT, ensure surgery timetables are adhered to, revising plans as needed.
- Assist in the training of Veterinary Support Team members to fulfill multiple roles within the department.
- Ensure infection control and biosecurity procedures are followed for the premises, animal housing units and equipment used within the centre.
- Accurate records management including animal data collection and entry.
- Maintaining inventory and ordering of medical and surgical supplies, vaccines and animal food.
- Accurately calculate, draw up and administer medications, including narcotics, to patients.
- Know and observe planes of anesthesia, and can differentiate between normal and abnormal responses; can effectively intervene when necessary.
- Prepare and transport patients for surgery; know and use best practices for clipping, scrubbing, and preparing surgical site.
- Assist as required in the surgical suite; practiced in maintaining sterility and assisting while gowned and gloved.
- Follows the policies and procedures set out by the Society and reports all incidents to his/her immediate supervisor immediately while working in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
- Communicate with clients on the status of their pet, and clearly outline post-operative instructions.
- All other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
- The successful candidate must have a minimum of three years progressive experience as a Registered Veterinary Technician within a clinic or high volume spay neuter setting.
- Experience administering medications and vaccinations to domestic animals.
- Ability to effectively and safely handle aggressive / feral animal populations.
- Demonstrated excellent communication, interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Be self motivated and have the ability to work as a part of a team.
- Must have an understanding and commitment to animal welfare philosophies and practices.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task.
- Proficiency in MS Word, MS Excel, and operating standard office equipment.
- Ability to perform in a fast-paced environment.
- Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the job, including but not limited to:
- The ability to handle and maneuver up to 50 lbs
- The ability to stay on feet for extended periods of time
- The ability to operate with full range of motion (i.e., crouching, kneeling, reaching, etc.)
- No known animal or animal husbandry related allergies which would limit or affect exposure to animals
