Website OVC Health Sciences Centre, University of Guelph

The Ontario Veterinary College Health Sciences Centre (OVC HSC) at the University of Guelph is offering Rotating Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) Internships, a one-year post-graduate experiential training program. The ideal candidate will be an RVT that desires additional training beyond their veterinary technology program or is unsure of next steps. Alternatively, the ideal candidate may also be a seasoned RVT who desires a career change and is looking to try different specialty areas before deciding on a new direction. The program is designed to offer the RVT the opportunity to increase their knowledge and gain experience in multiple disciplines, while working in an academic environment and state-of-the-art facility.

The RVT Intern will rotate through 40 weeks of core rotations of 2-4 weeks each. The remaining 10 weeks will be electives of 1-2 weeks of the intern’s choice and based on service availability. Rotations will be limited to services available in the HSC Companion Animal Hospital, Animal Cancer Centre, Large Animal Clinic, and the Smith Lane Animal Hospital.

All interns will be supervised by the Supervisor, Patient Care and Service Delivery, and mentored on the floor with existing RVT staff in the area in which the intern is scheduled. As this is a training program, RVTs will be working closely with service RVTs and/or rotating veterinary interns and will be provided with both observational and hands-on learning opportunities on clinical patients, as well as both didactic and hands-on simulated activities (for example RECOVER CPR training, skills techniques using models).

Interns will be expected to keep a case log of clinical cases, and complete mandatory and optional skills for each rotation. Benchmark assessments may be used in some rotations to gauge the intern’s knowledge. A capstone project or presentation of the intern’s choosing will be completed before the end of the internship.

Qualifications:

This position is open to candidates who are legally entitled to work in Canada and are graduates of a veterinary technology program. Candidates must be RVTs with the provincially recognized RVT accreditation association (such as the OAVT) or meet the eligibility criteria and are willing to apply for registration with their home association.

New Graduate RVTs are welcome to apply.

This position is a temporary one-year contract with full-time hours meeting the University of Guelph standard 35-hour work week. Depending on the rotation (24-hour vs 7-hour services), incumbents will be expected to be flexible with hours and may work a variety of shifts including days, nights, and/or weekends.  All schedules will be supplied in advance with the rotation schedule.

Benefits:

Ten paid vacation days will be allocated to each intern and scheduled in advance.
Eligibility to join University of Guelph benefits plan.
Annual Salary of $32,000 CAD, paid biweekly at an hourly rate, 35 hours per week.
Opportunity for interested interns to have a part-time contract in an area where they would meet the qualifications to be a part time RVT. This would allow the intern to work up to a maximum of 9 additional hours per week at the RVT rate with flexible scheduling.
Applicants are responsible for securing their own housing or having reliable transportation to and from the clinic.

Application Process:

Candidates are required to fill out a form to submit an application. The form will collect information about past education, past work experience, as well as a letter of interest. The applicant is asked to submit the names and contact details of the two professional references on the main application form, and written reference letters will be collected via a separate form link.

Timeline:

Complete application is due by January 6, 2025
Candidates will be notified by March 17, 2025, of the status of their application
The internship will start on June 16, 2025, in line with the start date of the rotating veterinary interns
