Position: Director of Animal Care
Reports to: Chair, Board of Directors
Hours per week: 40 hours per week
Reporting to the Board of Directors (the “Board”) and in close collaboration with the Director of Operations, the Director of Animal Care is a key member of the management team.
The Director of Animal Care is responsible for the management of the Northumberland Humane Society (“NHS”) Shelter. This includes but is not limited to the oversight of the health and welfare of the animals in the care of NHS.
The Director of Animal Care plays a critical role in the implementation of strategic priorities.
A strong focus will be placed on change management; building relationships and the development of processes and procedures; health and safety, financial operations, and oversight of general maintenance and improvements at the Shelter.
The successful candidate will be expected to coordinate and support major programs and projects in operations related to the Shelter, and capacity-building; able to lead fundraising activities and demonstrate a willingness to perform other duties as required.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Director of Animal Care is responsible for the leadership and administration of our Shelter located on Theatre Road in Cobourg. The Director of Animal Care plays a critical role in the implementation of strategic priorities.
The successful candidate brings a strong background in implementing and managing services and programs related to animal health and welfare. A growing organization, the Director of Animal Care is expected to identify, lead and support major programs and projects in operations related to the Shelter, and capacity-building; lead fundraising activities and demonstrate a willingness to spearhead other services and programs, as required.
The Director of Animal Care is responsible for the hiring, leading, coaching, development and retention of NHS Shelter and By-law staff.
The Director of Animal Care is responsible for the effective administration of NHS Shelters’ daily operations and will collaborate with staff to develop ideas to enhance such operations.
The Director of Animal Care is responsible for ensuring the maintenance of records related to municipal animal services and quarterly reporting to the appropriate municipal staff.
The Director of Animal Care will develop annual goals for staff that include timelines, and benchmarks to be accomplished, to meet the plans and objectives of the NHS Shelter.
The Director of Animal Care is responsible for managing all aspects of the Shelter employee relations for NHS.
The Director of Animal Care, in cooperation with the Director of Operations, is responsible for assessing, reporting, and with approval implementing upgrades to the NHS Shelter facility.
In collaboration with the Director of Operations, the Director of Animal Care will meet regularly with Shelter volunteers, agencies, and other stakeholders.
The Director of Animal Care is responsible to develop and maintain strong relationships with local veterinary professionals.
Participate in special event planning and participate in events as needed.
Foster relationships with donors and collaborate with community stakeholders to strengthen support of NHS programs and services.
Report and update the Board of Directors monthly and as needed in urgent and/or emergency circumstances.
Review, implement and monitor safety practices and protocols within the Shelter.
Stay abreast of health and safety legislation, practices, and protocols. And ensure staff and volunteers are appropriately trained to perform their duties with health and safety at the forefront.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The Director of Animal Care must be committed to the mission of the NHS. The essential skill set for this position includes strong knowledge of animal health and welfare, organizational leadership, emotional intelligence, solid people skills, a passion for animals, financial acumen, and the ability to prioritize.
Position-specific minimum requirements follow:
· Five years of managerial experience including financial management, with preference given to working in the charitable or not-for-profit sector or equivalent experience
· Three-year post-secondary related education, or equivalent combination of related education and experience
· Experience collaborating with a volunteer Board of Directors, or equivalent experience.
· Two years experience in fundraising or equivalent experience
· Two years experience with the media or equivalent experience.
· Background/solid knowledge of animal care, disease control, shelter operations, animal behaviour
· Successful completion and diploma with an accredited Veterinary Technology program recognized by the Ontario of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT), is preferred.
· Acceptable Police Records Check, including Vulnerable Sector Search
· Valid “G” driver’s license
· St. John Ambulance safety training, or an equivalent program, within the last five (5) years
· Proficient in the use of computer programs including Windows and MS Office.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
· Office and kennel space environment with frequent interruptions.
· Some lifting (e.g. up to 50 lbs.) of items.
· The nature of this role requires attendance at meetings and events outside the usual hours of work.
