REGISTERED VETERINARY TECHNICIAN (HOSPITAL)

40 hours per week | ON SITE | $50,000-$55,000 Annual Salary

About the Role

Reporting to the Hospital Operations Manager, the Registered Veterinary Technician (Hospital) will be responsible for assisting the hospital veterinarian with all aspects of surgical procedures and treatments and assisting with general hospital operations and administration. This position will also be responsible for the care of the animals housed in the hospital, ensuring hospital inventory and general cleanliness are maintained and supplies are ordered as required

What You’ll Do

  • Assist veterinarian with animals before, during, and following surgery and by preparing surgical equipment, administering and monitoring anaesthetics and post-surgery clean up
  • Handle, restrain and care for animals undergoing treatment and surgery
  • Monitor and recover animals post-surgery
  • Prepare and administer medications and vaccines under direction of veterinarian
  • Administer treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian
  • Work cohesively with hospital volunteers providing guidance as needed
  • Notifies supervisor of any health problems or concerns regarding the animals
  • Maintain, clean, and sterilize hospital equipment
  • May be called upon to give emergency resuscitation or perform other life saving procedures
  • Clean and disinfect cages, rooms, and surrounding areas
  • General housekeeping of clinic, including cleaning floors and counter tops
  • Ensure all animals that are treated in the hospital have records that are maintained accurately in client database systems and enter notes/exams as required
  • Maintain drug and surgery logs
  • Ensure that yourself and your team work in a safe, healthy, and supportive environment in accordance with all appropriate legislation and regulations

What You’ll Bring

  • Post-secondary education in Animal Science, Veterinary Technologies, Animal Care or equivalent work experience with certification as a Registered Veterinary Technician
  • Be a member of good standing with OAVT
  • Experience working in a veterinary hospital is required and a solid understanding of shelter medicine would be ideal
  • Strong time management and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with client based veterinary software and PetPoint as an asset
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve the goals of the organization
  • Speak, listen and write in a clear, thorough and timely manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques
  • Work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance the health and wellbeing of the animals in our care
  • Positively influence others to achieve results that are in the best interest of the organization
  • Demonstrates understanding and passion for animal welfare
  • Self-motivated with a proven ability to complete tasks with competency and accuracy
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of programs
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings as required

Working Conditions

The work environment inherently contains common animal-related allergens, including but not limited to fur, dander, and cleaning agents. This role also requires prolonged sitting (up to 8 hours/day), computer usage for extended periods, as well as standing, walking, bending as necessary. As such, you are able to perform all the essential duties of the position in such an environment.
