Position Overview
Under the supervision and guidance of the Manager, Animal Services, the Supervisor ensures all animals entering the shelter receive excellent emotional and physical health care. Provides information and record keeping as required. Leads, supervises and provides direction to shelter staff and functional supervision to animal control staff; including performs back-up role for Manager, as required.
Responsibilities
• Supervises the Animal Shelter staff as it relates to training, performance appraisals, discipline and recommendations on existing staffing levels.
• Participates in the recruitment process and prepares recommendations concerning selection of shelter staff.
• Coordinates and monitors the activities within the shelter including prioritizing and delegating workload, procedures etc.
• Schedules all staff and volunteers for the 24/7 operation.
• Ensures the needs of the department and its customers, both internal and external are being met.
• Coordinates, monitors, and assists the Manager to oversee the delivery of animal services, including shelter operations, compliance and enforcement activities, administrative duties and public education.
• Performs variety of animal health care duties, including examination of animals, treatment or inoculations.
• Administers injections, performs venipuncture, euthanasia, applies wound dressings, and takes vital signs of animals.
• Performs physical exam of all animals arriving at shelter, performs temperament testing, monitors animals during their stay and provides any required health care.
• Determines adoptability of animals through health and temperament assessment, and interviews potential adoptees to determine suitability
• Ensures the shelter is maintained, to include but not limited to, a clean and safe environment; staff are trained and compliant with Health and Safety Guidelines, and following standard operating procedures, including utilizing all Personal Protective Equipment provided.
• Provides training and orientation to staff, volunteers and student placements as required.
• Liaises with veterinary hospitals for surgeries and advanced care of animals (makes decisions regarding treatment).
Qualifications and Experience
• A three (3) year College Diploma in Veterinary Technology, possessing current status of Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) with the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT).
• A minimum 5 years’ experience working in a veterinary clinic or animal shelter in a Registered Veterinary Technician position, with sound clinical skills, including two (2) years’ supervisory experience. Has had up to two (2) years’ experience managing a shelter or other facility and staff while working as a Registered Veterinarian Technician.
• Preferred: Eight (8) years’ experience in a veterinary clinic or shelter as a Registered Veterinary Technician. Experience in a municipal government/municipal animal shelter environment is an asset, preferably within a unionized environment.
• Thorough knowledge of animal handling and identification, health, husbandry, and behaviour.
• Working knowledge of applicable animal legislation, including the ability to interpret and apply animal control by-laws.
• Proven ability to extract information and accurately prepare briefings and reports.
• Knowledge of Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA) as it relates to job functions and solid judgment skills in the preparation of documents, training of staff and release of information in keeping with MFIPPA legislation.
• A valid non-probationary Ontario ‘G’ drivers’ license in good standing, with a reliable vehicle for corporate use. May drive a corporate vehicle as required.
• Must remain thoroughly familiar with pertinent legislation, regulations, guidelines, policies, and good animal care practices, including maintenance of CE credits and other membership requirements for RVT status with the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT).
• Successful candidate(s) will be required to submit a clear Vulnerable Screening Criminal Record Check, prior to commencing employment.
• Knowledge of and demonstrated ability in the City’s core and leadership competencies and relevant functional competencies.
• The regular schedule for this role is Tuesday to Saturday plus on call at other times.
• Ability to work variable shifts including evenings, weekends and statutory holidays.
• Works in a veterinary clinic environment where incumbent maybe exposed to smells, temperature changes, dampness, and aggressive or sick animals.
• May be required to travel locally for work.
