- Periodontal disease is the most common condition in dogs examined by veterinarians. It can cause severe local disease, particularly in small or toy dogs, and has been associated with cardiac, hepatic and renal abnormalities. It is entirely preventable, but requires life-long management to maintain optimal oral health.
