Common Bloodwork Abnormalities in Geriatrics

Routine blood work for the early detection of abnormalities is an important part of proactive health monitoring for senior dogs. This lecture reviews the most common lab work findings in senior dogs with a specific focus on the hepatobiliary, renal and endocrine systems. We discuss which abnormalities should warrant concern as potential indicators of underlying health issues.

Three Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the most common lab work abnormalities in senior dogs
  • Provide a differential list for low T4 and understand how to diagnose hypothyroidism
  • Determine when elevated liver enzymes in senior dogs should warrant further work-up

Speaker:  Dr. Lauren Adelman, DVM, DACVIM (SAIM)

Dr. Lauren Adelman is a board certified Internal Medicine Specialist practicing out of Canada West Veterinary Specialists in Vancouver, British Columbia where she offers state of the art minimally invasive procedures to her feline and canine patients. Dr. Adelman enjoys educating pet owners and other veterinarians on her social media channel (@the_tinyvet) and through regular TV appearances. She co-founded the Senior Dog Veterinary Society, focused specifically on enhancing the care of senior and geriatric canine patients. Outside of work, Dr. Adelman enjoys spending time at the beach with her husband, daughter and two dogs Joey and Freddie.
