Toxicology Toolkit: Optimizing GI Decontamination and Activated Charcoal Use in Dogs and Cats

June 10, 2026

Join us for this presentation and, using clinical case examples, gain the confidence to decide when to decontaminate, how to do it safely, and when to pivot to other supportive care strategies.

When a pet ingests a toxin, the “golden window” for intervention is brief. Decisions regarding gastrointestinal decontamination must be made quickly, balancing the potential for success against the risk of complications. In this 60-minute webcast, Dr. Holowaychuk will provide a comprehensive, evidence-based review of GI decontamination strategies in small animal practice. The session will begin with the latest protocols for inducing emesis, including pharmacological choices and contraindications. The second half of the presentation will take a deep dive into the clinical use of activated charcoal. We will discuss the science of adsorption, identifying which toxins are (and are not) effectively neutralized, and how to manage potential side effects such as hypernatremia.
