OAVT Veterinary technician/technology education Accreditation program (VTEAP)

Per the OAVT Act, Bill Pr3, the OAVT is responsible for “prescribing the courses of study to be pursued by students and candidates to satisfy the academic requirements of any class of membership;”. The veterinary technician/technology education programs accredited by the OAVT must meet a comprehensive set of standards to ensure graduates demonstrate a minimum level of competence and education before they are eligible to write the National licensing (registration) examination, the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE). The OAVT has been accrediting education programs for over 25 years.

The Accreditation Process
To initiate a new accreditation cycle, the education program submits a notice of intent to the OAVT at least six month before the expiry of the current accreditation term. The VTEAP Committee reviews and scores the information submitted by the education program and a Preliminary Accreditation staus is issued.

The next phase of the accreditation process is a site visit. A team of surveyors visit the education program on location and gathers additional information. This occurs each accreditation cycle and the purpose is to further assess compliance with the standards through facility and equipement inspection, and interviews with students, faculty and staff.

Following the conclusion of the initial submission and the site visit, the VTEAP Committee grants the education program either a one, three, or five year accreditation based on an objective decision-making framework. A higher score earns a longer accreditation term.

The OAVT Veterinary Technician/Technology Education Accreditation Program (VTEAP) is outlined in Regulation Policy 9, Accreditation of Educational Programs. Please contact us at oavt@oavt.org for additional information or to obtain your copy of the VTEAP manual.
