The Veterinary Technician and Veterinary Assistant programs use the licensed on-campus veterinary hospital as a major site for student lab activities in all semesters of the program Labs will be held primarily at the Orillia campus and may include some labs at the Barrie campus. The facility operates as a veterinary hospital (GCVH) for teaching purposes. Reporting to the Associate Dean, the incumbent, working alongside a faculty member supports student learning activities, Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
- Supporting student learning activities during lab sessions which includes:
- Oversight of skills development on a variety of species during laboratory classroom experiences
- Communication and problem solving with students and course faculty regarding animal health status
- Completion of the administrative duties associated with animal use in labs, and skill completion
- Collaborates with faculty to formulate a plan of action, and provide feedback to students and faculty to ensure students meet competency
- Provides feedback to students and faculty in the form of skills lists and rubrics
- Provides hands on review of skills and class materials with students
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Successfully completed a two or three-year postsecondary Veterinary Technician or Technology diploma
- Must possess, and maintain, current registration in good standing with the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT)
- Five years experience as a Registered Veterinary Technician
- Experience training and demonstrating skills to others
- Demonstrated knowledge of health and safety rules and regulations
- Communication and interpersonal skills to provide clear concise information
- Must be self-directed with the ability to work independently and as a team member
- Demonstrated planning, coordinating and time management skills
- Proven analytical, critical thinking, decision making, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold the Code of Conduct of the OAVT
- Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position lifting equipment and larger animals up to 44 lbs., and over 44lbs (on occasion)
- Depending on the course of interest, rodent and large animal handling skills and knowledge of care would be considered an asset
