About the Position

This is a unique opportunity for a compassionate, experienced Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) who wants to make a meaningful impact in rescue work. As the Medical Program Manager, you will lead the development, coordination, and oversight of our medical program, ensuring every animal in our care receives high-quality, thoughtful, and timely health care. Ideal for an independent, organized RVT seeking flexible work, this role blends medical leadership, case management, and hands-on guidance for our foster network.

TCR  is a cat rescue organization service the GTA and Waterloo Region. We are committed to providing compassionate medical care, rehabilitation, and second chances to vulnerable at-risk cats. As a small but dedicated team, we are expanding our capacity with a skilled RVT who shares our mission to improve animal welfare through high-quality rescue and shelter medicine practices.

Key Responsibilities

Program Coordination & Medical Oversight

Oversee and manage the rescue’s full medical program, ensuring high standards of care.
Implement, and refine medical protocols for intake, assessment, treatment, isolation, and preventative care.
Coordinate spay/neuter, diagnostics, surgeries, vaccinations, and medical appointments with shelter and partner veterinarians.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records for all animals in care in Petpoint, our CRM.
Case Management

Review medical histories, diagnostics, and treatment plans; provide informed recommendations to the support team and foster parents.
Monitor cats in foster homes through ongoing communication about medical needs, medication compliance, and follow-up care.
Support medical decision-making for urgent, complex, or chronic cases.
Foster & Staff Support

Provide clear, accessible medical guidance to fosters, volunteers, and internal team members.
Educate fosters on medication administration, infection control, and post-operative care.
Offer training on shelter-medicine best practices when needed.
Pet Retention & Post-Adoption Support

(Medical & Behavioural Cases)

Provide medical guidance to adopters post-placement to support successful transitions.
Assist with troubleshooting post-adoption medical concerns, offering recommendations and coordinating veterinary follow-ups when appropriate.
Support behavioural retention cases in collaboration with our behaviour team, offering medical insight when behaviour may be influenced by health issues.
Help prevent returns by offering practical, empathetic, and evidence-informed support to adopters navigating early medical or behavioural challenges.
Logistics & Administration

Manage ordering, inventory, and tracking of medications, preventatives, medical supplies, and equipment.
Collaborate with leadership to identify medical priorities, improve processes, and support organizational planning.

Qualifications

Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) in good standing in Ontario.
Required: Experience in shelter/rescue medicine or a high-volume veterinary environment.
Strong understanding of infectious disease management, outbreak prevention, and population health.
Excellent communication skills, especially in remote support roles.
Highly organized and comfortable managing multiple cases simultaneously.
Proficient with digital tools for communication, record-keeping, and case tracking.

Nice-to-Have Skills

Experience developing or managing medical programs.
Familiarity with shelter software (e.g. PetPoint), Google Workspace
Interest in community outreach or public education.
Experience working with medically complex or behaviourally challenging cats

Work Environment & Schedule

Full-time, 37.5 hours weekly
Approximately 80% remote with flexible hours
Occasional in-person or on-site responsibilities (large intakes, medical cases, volunteer and staff events)

Compensation

Full time salary of $62,000.00 – $65,000.00 per year commensurate with level of education, credentials, and experience. TCR also offers paid vacation and a benefit plan. There is opportunity for future growth in this position.
