The Kingston Humane Society, a non-profit animal welfare organization and registered charity, is seeking an engaging and energetic individual to fill the position of full-time Registered Veterinary Technician. The ideal candidate will be adaptable within the ever-changing atmosphere of leading shelter medicine practices.

Job Title: Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)

Location: Kingston, Ontario

Job Type: Full-time

Hours/week: 37.5

Schedule: Shift

Job Summary:

The Registered Veterinary Technician will be responsible for the medical care and well-being of shelter animals. They will assist veterinarians in surgery, provide routine medical treatments, and ensure the shelter clinic operates efficiently.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the health of shelter animals and report concerns to the veterinarian.
  • Administer vaccinations, medications, and treatments as prescribed under direction of DVM
  • Assist in surgical procedures, including pre-medication, anesthesia monitoring, and post-operative care.
  • Perform diagnostic tests such as radiographs, bloodwork, and fecal exams.
    Maintain accurate medical records for all animals.
  • Educate shelter staff and adopters on animal health and care.
  • Ensure proper sanitation and hygiene in the clinic and shelter areas.
  • Handle and restrain animals safely and humanely.
  • Assist in emergency medical situations.

Qualifications:

  • Two-year Community College Diploma in the Veterinary Technician program.
  • Previous experience in a veterinary clinic or animal shelter preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of animal breeds, behaviors, and handling techniques.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Physical ability to lift and restrain animals.

Work Environment:

  • Exposure to infectious diseases and cleaning chemicals.
  • High noise levels due to barking and other animal sounds.
  • Standing, bending, and lifting throughout the shift.
