Reporting to a faculty member in the department of Clinical Studies, the department is seeking to hire a temporary full time Registered Veterinary Technician through the generous donation of funding from Hill’s Pet Nutrition to assist the OVC Pet Nutrition Team with the mission of improving individual animal health by educating outstanding veterinary professionals and advancing knowledge in the field of veterinary medicine, with a specific focus on pet weight care.
Duties and Responsibilities
The position will be assigned to provide animal health technical duties within the OVC Health Sciences Centre’s Clinical Nutrition Service and newly developed Pet Weight Care Program (75% of workload) and within a veterinary clinical research setting (25% of workload).
Under the supervision of a department faculty member, the key areas of responsibility will include:
- Assisting in the nutrition aspects of admission, care and discharge of companion animal patients, with a specific focus on pet weight care.
- Providing technical support and functional guidance to student veterinarians, undergraduate and graduate students, clinicians (faculty) and hospital staff.
- Instruction of student veterinarians and veterinary nutrition specialists in training in clinical skills pertinent to veterinary nutrition and client communication.
- Performing nutritional assessment and clinical procedures in a veterinary clinical research setting
Requirements
- Successful completion of an accredited Veterinary Technician program recognized by the Ontario Association for Veterinary Technicians
- Evidence of commitment and dedication to companion animal nutrition with interest in board certification.
- Candidates must have successfully completed the Veterinary Technician Examination (VTNE) and the OAVT mandatory ethics exam.
- OAVT registration is required.
- A minimum of 1 year prior experience working as a Registered Veterinary Technician is preferred.
- A protective rabies titer is required.
- Required Skills:
- Excellent client & team communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to work effectively and demonstrate composure under pressure/stressful conditions
- Experience performing restraint and routine clinical procedures (e.g. physical exam, blood draw, sedation/anesthesia, imaging etc.) in companion animals are all required competencies for the role
- Proficiency with a variety of computer software applications including word processing, spreadsheet.
The incumbent will be expected to work a 35-hour work week with occasional scheduling flexibility.
