Registered Veterinary Technician in the Specialty of Veterinary Dentistry.
We are looking for a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) to be our Veterinary Dentistry Technician. Strengths should reflect competency in general anesthesia and client communication.
The candidate should be familiar with multiple anesthetic premedication and maintenance protocols and with advanced monitoring. A minimum of three years experience as a Registered Veterinary Technician, preferably in a specialty/referral environment, would be a strong asset for candidate.
Excellent communication skills are required and bilingualism would be an asset but is not a requirement. Attention to detail both in application of associated technical skills and organizational duties is essential.
The requisite skills in assisting Lorraine Hiscox, DVM, DAVDC at an advanced level will be acquired with exposure and the successful candidate should have a desire to learn these skills. Attending continuing education with an emphasis on anesthesia and dentistry is expected.
It is intended that the individual who attains this position will evolve to an advanced level in their ability to perform dental prophylaxis and obtain full-mouth intra-oral radiographs as well as maintain sharpness of hand instrumentation and administer intra-oral anesthetic blocks. The successful applicant will, with training, be able to initiate the patient referral consultation and complete appropriate dental charting under veterinary supervision. On-the-job training will provide exposure to more advanced veterinary dental procedures with the intention that you will be able to assist in those procedures.
Responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:
Performing and documenting a pre-anesthetic evaluation of the patient with the doctor.
Implementing an anesthetic and analgesic plan determined by the doctor.
Knowledge and calculation of common anesthetic drugs.
Administer premedication, induction agents and perform intubation/extubation.
Familiarity with a ventilator is helpful (training can be provided).
Maintain, in a timely fashion, accurate anesthesia and dental records
Understand and monitor the patient’s vital signs pre- intra- and postoperatively
Manage the patient’s recovery from anesthesia
Ability to recognize scenarios in anesthesia that require attention and possess the ability to respond appropriately.
Understand, troubleshoot, and maintain anesthesia machine, monitoring equipment, and dental equipment
