
It Takes A Team, A 2-part nutrition series: Part 1: Optimizing Nutrition in Your Practice
Learning Objectives:
- Emphasize the role of every veterinary team member in discuss nutrition and provide a consistent message.
- Mobilize RVTs to lead nutrition conversations: discuss wellness nutrition, myth bust, provide resources, follow up, etc.
- How to ask the right questions to make impactful nutritional recommendations
- Diet selection for weight loss; overweight vs obese patients
- Navigating current challenges (cost of weight loss diets, client compliance, openness of clients to commit to a weight loss program)
- Tandem style with DVM and RVT, reinforce that collaboration can be successful, sharing some of the strategies/processes to ensure consistent nutrition communication within the clinic could help clinics more effectively discuss nutrition
Presenters:
Dr. Caitlin Grant DVM, DVSc, EBVS Specialist in Veterinary and Comparative Nutrition (Dip ECVCN)
Dr. Caitlin attended the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) and graduated with honours in 2014. After graduation, she became an associate veterinarian in a private, mixed animal practice. In 2017, she returned to OVC and completed a nutrition residency through the European College of Veterinary and Comparative Nutrition (ECVCN) and earned a Doctor of Veterinary Science (DVSc) degree in September 2020.
Dr. Caitlin then joined OVC as Assistant Professor and held the Nestle Purina Professorship in Companion Animal Nutrition. She was service chief for the OVC-HSC Clinical Nutrition Service and taught nutrition to students in all four phases of the DVM program. She joined the team at Animal Hospital of Cambridge in 2023 as a full-time Board-Certified Veterinary Nutritionist and provides in clinic as well as telemedicine nutrition consultations to pet owners across Ontario and to veterinarians nationwide.
Michele Brydges Lead RVT/Nutrition Leader
Michele is a Lead Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT)/Nutrition Leader at the Animal Hospital of Cambridge, with a special interest in nutrition and critical care. With over 15 years of experience in the veterinary field, Michele has a strong passion for providing exceptional care to all patients within the hospital while also providing nutrition advice and education to staff and clients. Michele has developed and run a successful weight loss program since 2017 at the Animal Hospital of Cambridge, helping pets live longer and healthier lives. In 2023, Michele eagerly took on an additional role as Dr Grant’s Nutrition RVT. Michele assists her with the Referral Nutrition Service based out of the Animal Hospital of Cambridge. This added responsibility has allowed Michele to continue to grow her knowledge in veterinary nutrition.
